Smokey Bear to make an appearance

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 2, 2015) — As part of National Fire Prevention Week—from Oct. 4-10—a free educational event will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at Saint Clair Mall in downtown Frankfort.

Smokey Bear will be in attendance.

This year’s theme is “Hear the beep where you sleep.” According to the National Fire Protection Association, about half of home fire deaths result from fires that occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

“The No. 1 message of this year’s Fire Prevention Week is to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement,” said State Fire Marshal Bill Swope.  He said larger homes may need more alarms.

The fall wildfire hazard season runs through Dec. 15. Outdoor burning is prohibited from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in or within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland.
