Lexington honors winners of Green Business Challenge

Lucia’s, Habitat for Humanity honored

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 17, 2105) — Lucia’s World Emporium and Habitat for Humanity were named the winners of Lexington’s 2015 Green Business Challenge. The challenge, organized nationally by the International Council on Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), is designed to improve community sustainability by providing tools and technical support for business who wish to incorporate green business practices into their operations.

greenHabitat won in the property owner category while Lucia’s won in the leased space category. The winners were recognized in a ceremony on Wednesday at Lucia’s. Winners were presented each with a certificate along with a $1,000 gift card from Office Depot, the national platinum sponsor of the Green Business Challenge.

The Challenge featured an engaging, activity-based format to keep businesses involved and improving throughout the competition period. More than 100 activities were available to complete for points — everything from creating a green team to earning LEED certification.

This is the fifth year that the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government has participated in the challenge with Bluegrass Greensource managing the program.
