Most classes introduce general skills in technical fields
ASHLAND, Ky. (Jan. 15, 2016) —Workforce Training Classes will start this month at Ashland Community and Technical College to help people explore new job fields. Although designed for people affected by the recent layoffs at AK Steel, the short-term classes are open to anyone considering a new career. Many of these non-credit classes introduce general skills in technical fields in which ACTC offers certificate and diploma programs.
Classes do not require previous experience.
Classes:
- Intro to Welding classes — will focus on basic skills for Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Stick) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (Mig) from plate to pipe. The evening class meets Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, Jan. 25 to Feb. 19, from 4-8 p.m. The daytime class is on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, Jan. 19 to Feb. 11, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Classes are held at the Technology Drive Campus. Fee is $300.
- Intro to CADD (Computer Aided Drafting and Design) — will include basic drafting terminology and how to print, as well as produce Multiview, Isometric and section drawings using AutoCad. Students will also learn the basics of 3D models, mechanical animation and 3D printing using Inventor. The class will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 2 to 25, from 5-7 p.m. at the Technology Drive Campus. The fee for this 32-hour class is $159.
- Basic Carpentry — will teach skills and safety needed in the woodshop. Participants will work on basic cabinet making skills on projects of their own. The class will meet Feb. 8 to March 5 at the Technology Drive Campus, with class session on Mondays and Fridays from 5-9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The four-week class fee is $300.
- Other classes are — High Performance Engine Rebuilding and Sustainable Living classes in February and Certified Fiber Optics classes in March. CDL Truck Driving classes are ongoing, and additional classes in Basic Computer Skills, Hydraulics/Pneumatics and Industrial Safety are being planned.
