$10,000 scholarship up for grabs at Keeneland’s College Scholarship Day

Drawing will be held Friday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 6, 2016) — Keeneland and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association (KTA) have announced that Jim and Linda McIngvale, owners of champion male sprinter Runhappy, will contribute $10,000 to Keeneland’s College Scholarship Day, to be held on opening day on April 8. The Runhappy Scholarship will be awarded via random drawing to one lucky full-time student after the 8th race post parade.

keenKeeneland partners with the KTA to host the popular College Scholarship Day during each Spring and Fall race meet. On that day, thousands of students from colleges and universities throughout Kentucky and beyond attend and have the opportunity to register to win one of ten $1,000 scholarships awarded following each of the day’s races. Since its inception in the fall of 2002, Keeneland and the KTA have awarded more than $260,000 in college scholarships.

“Runhappy is a favorite among racing fans, and we thank Jim and Linda McIngvale for funding this generous scholarship in his name,” Keeneland President and CEO Bill Thomason said. “Keeneland is committed to excellence in education and our College Scholarship Day is a special part of our mission.”

Runhappy, who is based at Keeneland’s The Thoroughbred Center in Lexington, won the 2015 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (G3) and TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) here last fall. McIngvale purchased Runhappy, a colt by Super Saver, for $200,000 from consignor Ashview Farm at Keeneland’s 2013 September Yearling Sale.

“After purchasing Runhappy at the Keeneland September Sale, we returned here for two major victories, including a record-breaking performance in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint,” said Jim and Linda McIngvale of Gallery Racing. “In an effort to give back to Keeneland and the Lexington community, we hope this scholarship will set one lucky college student on the track to ‘happyness’ and success.”

Admission on College Scholarship Day is free to students with a college ID. The first 2,000 students to register will receive a Keeneland College Scholarship Day T-shirt courtesy of Kennedy’s Wildcat Den or a Southern Proper hat.
