Kite Fest kicks-off spring season in Lexington

Event is April 16 at Jacobson Park, marina also opens

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 11, 2016) – The skies of Jacobson Park will be filled with hundreds of kites this Saturday, April 16 as Lexington Parks & Recreation celebrates Kite Fest—the city’s premiere springtime event.

Residents of all ages are invited to attend the free event from noon – 4 p.m.

kites-flying-pics-1024X768“Kite Fest is Parks’ first major outdoor event of the season, and the perfect way to get families and children out and enjoying springtime in Kentucky,” said Monica Conrad, director of Lexington Parks & Recreation.  “Whether you’re an experienced kite-flyer, a first-time participant, or simply want to watch the kites take flight—Kite Fest has something for everyone. Come out to Jacobson Park on April 16 and enjoy a great day of family fun!”

Kite Fest coincides with National Kite Month and is a celebration of all-things kites—from kite-flying to kite-making to kite history.  The event also features a range of other free children’s activities including:

•a giant inflatable slide

•an obstacle course

•face-painting

•Explorium of Lexington activities

•a Zumba class for kids, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

China is the birthplace of the kite, and to honor its heritage the Chinese School will have music and dance performances beginning at 2:15 p.m.

Food vendors will also be on-site throughout the afternoon, or families may pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic at the park.

Jacobson Park Marina

April 16 also marks the opening of the Jacobson Park Marina.  For the first time this season, park-goers will be able to rent paddle boats or launch non-motorized boats on the water.

Fees are $4 for one-half hour for a two-person paddle boat, $6 for one-half hour for a four-person paddle boat and $3 to launch a non-motorized boat.  The marina will be open weekends only, Saturday from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sunday from 1 – 7 p.m.
