Free seminar focuses on transition from elementary school to middle school

For parents, teachers and caregivers

MIDWAY, Ky. (May 3, 2016) — Kosair Charities Children’s Peace Center at Our Lady of Peace, part of KentuckyOne Health, is hosting an education seminar for parents, teachers and caregivers help adjust to students’ transition from elementary school to middle school. The free seminar is scheduled for 6 p.m. on May 12 at Northside Elementary School in Midway.

The seminar is part of the 2016 Peace for Parents educational series. Through the program, Our Lady of Peace experts host educational seminars to help parents, grandparents, teachers, counselors and others who want to learn more about how to face challenging issues with children and adolescents. The seminars usually last an hour.

David Houvenagle, LCSW, a therapist in the Crossroads program at Our Lady of Peace, will be the guest speaker. The seminar will address issues that may arise during this time of transition from elementary to middle school, including social media, developing positive relationships and bullying. Houvenagle will also discuss different stages of development, as well as emotional changes that may take place, and how parents can foster independence, while providing limits for their children.

“Change is never an easy thing, so it’s important to be there for children at difficult times, such as transferring from one school to another,” said Jennifer Nolan, president, Our Lady of Peace. “This seminar is important to help parents, teachers and others manage any challenge that may arise during this transition.”
