FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 24, 2016) — Five public service announcements written and produced by Kentucky high school students will begin airing on TV and radio stations statewide this summer. The 30-second announcements were the winning entries in the KnowHow2Pay PSA Challenge that features Kentucky students explaining different ways to pay for education after high school.
The contest was open to students in the Student Technology Leadership Program sponsored by the Kentucky Department of Education.
The first place winner was “Capable,” created by Rest Aliu, a junior at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, Lexington. Other winners include:
“The College Conundrum,” Marion County High School, Lebanon
“Now or Never,” Hart County High School, Munfordville
“Take a Career Cruise,” Ballard High School, Louisville
“Fast Facts about FAFSA” (radio), Marion County High School, Lebanon
“Our overall winning PSA depicts the central message of this campaign—that every student, through hard work and determination, is capable of making college a reality for themselves,” said Dr. Aaron Thompson, executive vice president, Council on Postsecondary Education. “Students are one of the most powerful messengers we can engage to ensure more students and families understand there’s more than one way to pay for college.”
The KnowHow2Pay campaign is a partnership between the Prichard Committee Student Voice Team and the Kentucky College and Career Connection Coalition (Ky3C), among other partnering organizations. The Student Voice team works with teens and college students across the commonwealth to elevate the voices of Kentucky youth on education issues and to support students as policy partners in improving Kentucky schools.
“The Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) provides a project-based learning experience that empowers Kentucky’s K-12 students to share what they know by creating and using technology to develop skills that will put them on the path to college- and career-readiness. These winning public service announcements are a wonderful way to highlight these students’ achievements and also allow them to assist their peers in their postsecondary planning,” said Education Commissioner Stephen Pruitt.
The new KnowHow2Pay ads are the latest phase of the long-running KnowHow2GOKy campaign sponsored by the Council on Postsecondary Education and the GEAR UP Kentucky program, a statewide grant that helps students prepare for college success. All ads are available online and all media materials point viewers to KnowHow2GOKy.org, a college and career preparation website for youth and adults.
