Part of ‘240 Reasons to Celebrate America Right Now’
LOUISVILLE (July 1, 2016) — Under the theme “240 Reasons to Celebrate America Right Now,” TIME magazine’s current issue touts Louisville as a place of “free-wheeling innovation” and growth.
From General Electric’s FirstBuild microfactory, to renowned chef Edward Lee, to Louisville Orchestra conductor Teddy Abrams, the magazine says, Louisville has “quite a lot going on,” and is among the mid-size cities in the U.S. that are leading a broad “remaking of the way we work, live and interact.”
“Though the city may be best known for hosting the sybaritic festival and horse race the locals just call Derby, there is newly quite a lot going on — year-round,” writes Jack Dickey in an article detailing Reason No. 119 for celebrating America: “Our midsize cities are having a renaissance.”
Dickey quotes Mayor Greg Fischer on the issue of cities having more “pliability” in terms of development and other issues.
“We’re big enough that we’re internationally recognized but small enough to get things done,” Fischer said of Louisville.
Fischer said today that the magazine article reflects a growing national interest in Louisville as a city that is growing in a smart, compassionate way.
“From our vibrant arts, music and restaurant scene, to our affordable housing market, our growing job market and our big-city, small-town feel, people are taking notice,” he said.
