Deadline for independent candidates to be on November general election ballot is Aug. 9

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 3, 2016) — The filing deadline for independent candidates and other political organization or group candidates to be on the general election ballot in November is 4 p.m. local time Aug. 9. The Aug. 9 filing deadline does not apply for to candidates for President and Vice President of the U.S..

“I encourage all interested candidates to submit their filings as soon as possible to allow time to address any problems with their paperwork,” said Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky’s chief election official.

Law requires that most independent, political organization or group candidates for most offices, except federal offices, to have filed a statement of candidacy form no later than April 1 to be qualified.

Several unexpired terms for Circuit and District judge seats will appear on the Nov. 8 general election ballot. Candidates for those vacant offices that file with the Secretary of State must also file their paperwork by Aug. 9. There may be additional unexpired terms for offices that file with the county clerk. Individuals who may want to run for those offices should contact their county clerk.

Following the Aug. 9 filing deadline, public drawings for ballot position will be held in the filing officials’ offices at 2 p.m. local time on Aug. 11
