Career Calculator available to use for free
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 8, 2016) — Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer today unveiled the Career Calculator, a new free online tool that that can help students, parents and job seekers plan for careers and chart the education they will need for good jobs.
“The Career Calculator is an invaluable resource because it puts accurate job and education data at people’s fingertips and makes it understandable and user-friendly,” Fischer said. “It’s a key step toward meeting our crucial Cradle to Career goal of creating a cycle where good education leads to good jobs, which leads to family-supporting wages.”
The interactive web app enables users to search current job and education data for the Louisville region by occupation, college major and income, allowing individuals to make informed decisions about their college and career choices.
“Information is empowering, and that’s why we’ve made it a priority to gather and analyze workforce data. Now, we’ve put it all in one place and made it easily searchable,” said Michael Gritton, executive director of KentuckianaWorks, which developed the Career Calculator through a grant from the James Graham Brown Foundation. “It will be of huge value to people of all ages, from younger high school students looking ahead to college, to adults switching to a more rewarding career later in life.”
The calculator was created in consultation with local educators, career specialists and others.
Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Donna Hargens said the district’s school counselors are eager to begin using the new tool to help guide students. “This application provides real-world information to our students and shows the results of how investing in their education and focusing on a career path can pay off in the future,” she said.
In addition to being used by high school students and counselors, the Career Calculator will be available as a resource at local universities, Louisville Free Public Library branches, at the regional Kentucky Career Center locations operated by KentuckianaWorks, and at the WorkOne Centers in Southern Indiana.
The Career Calculator earlier this year earned Louisville a 2016 U.S. Conference of Mayors/USA Funds National Education Pathways with a Purpose award. Louisville and two other cities received the awards for initiatives that help steer people to and through college and on to rewarding careers. The award came with a $100,000 grant that Mayor Fischer said will be used to further the goals of the Cradle to Career initiative.
