Sullivan College of Pharmacy awarded residency expansion grant

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 31, 2016) — The Sullivan University College of Pharmacy has been awarded a $25,000 grant that will allow the College to expand its pharmacy residency training programs.

Awarded by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Research and Education Foundation, the Pharmacy Residency Expansion Grant will be used by Sullivan to increase the number of residents working in the Center for Health and Wellness from three to four by partnering with St. Matthews Community Pharmacy in St. Matthews.

The Sullivan University College of Pharmacy was one of just 10 institutions receiving grants this year.

“We are very grateful to ASHP for this grant, which will provide an additional residency position in Louisville,” said Sullivan University College of Pharmacy Dean Dr. Cindy Stowe. “And it will allow us to continue and enhance our existing relationship with St. Matthews Community Pharmacy.”

With a mission to empower health care professionals and individual patients to improve their health and wellness through innovative and inter-professional health education and care, The Center for Health & Wellness is a professionally licensed facility providing health care services and educational opportunities to Sullivan University employees and students as well as the general public. The Center works with individual patients and their primary care providers, empowering individuals to take control of their health and well being.

“The ASHP Foundation understands the importance of expanding residency training opportunities in practice,” ASHP Foundation CEO Stephen J. Allen said in a press release announcing the grant. “As the profession continues to grow, residency training has become critical.”

Through the partnership with St. Matthews Community Pharmacy, residents gain valuable, additional outpatient experience, said Sullivan University College of Pharmacy Residency Program Coordinator Dr. Holly Byrnes.

“This grant will be a tremendous boost to our residency programs, which not only helps provide valuable training, experience and education for our pharmacy residents but also helps us build a stronger residency program at the Sullivan University College of Pharmacy while positively impacting patient care for those in our community,” Byrnes said.
