Local businesses, community organizations invited to Summer Youth Job Training Program breakfast

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 3, 2017) – The Summer Youth Job Training Program will host an informational breakfast for local businesses and community-based organizations on Monday, March 27, from 9 – 10:30 a.m. at the Phoenix Building, 101 E. Vine Street.

Community stakeholders will learn how they can partner with the city of Lexington to provide career opportunities to Lexington youth at no cost to them.

“The Summer Youth Job Training Program is a wonderful way for businesses in Lexington to help mentor local youth as they learn valuable skills necessary in the workplace,” said Mattie Morton, SYJTP program administrator. “We are looking to hire more than 300 teens and young adults this summer so participation from community partners is crucial to the success of this program.”

The Summer Youth Job Training Program is a public-private partnership that provides real-world job experience to students ages 14 – 17 by pairing them up to work for local employers. The LFUCG compensates the youth worker trainees, while employers help the students develop quality job skills and workforce experience.

The 2017 Summer Youth Job Training Program will run for six weeks, from June 12 – July 21. Youth worker trainees will work part-time (20 hours a week) during this period and will earn $8.20 per hour (paid by LFUCG). Participating employers are not responsible for compensation.

Applications for youth participants are available at all Fayette County public schools (middle & high), all branches of the Lexington Public Library, Lexington Parks & Recreation community centers and on the city’s website at lexingtonky.gov/youth-development-center. The deadline for youth participant signups is March 15.
