Butler, Murray score victories in first round of girls state basketball tourney

Advance to quarterfinals

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 8, 2017) — Butler and Murray each advanced today during the opening round of the St. Elizabeth Healthcare/KHSAA Girls Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament at BB&T Arena on the campus of Northern Kentucky University.

Butler beat Sacred Heart 50-36 and Murray beat Nelson County 71-30. The two teams face each other in the quarterfinals at noon on Friday. Butler is the defending state champion.

In tonight’s games Boyd County plays Mercer County at 6:30 and George Rogers Clark plays Harlan at 8. The winners play at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

In Thursday’s games Henderson County plays Knott County Central at noon, Russell County plays Franklin County at 1:30 p.m., Simon Kenton plays Paintsville at 6:30 p.m. and Holmes plays Grayson County at 8 p.m.

Semifinals are Saturday and the championship is at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
