VIDEO: Lt. Gov. Hampton launches Bluegrass Book Buddies reading initiative

Encourages Kentuckians to read

FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 8, 2017) — Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton today announced a new literacy challenge, Bluegrass Book Buddies (KYB3), as part of the Lt. Governor’s Challenge Series. It is the second challenge of that series, which also includes the Entrepreneurship Challenge.

The KYB3 Challenge is an initiative inviting Kentuckians of all ages to try reading in a fresh way through meaningful community and shared experience. There are three steps involved in the KYB3 Challenge: Pick a buddy, Pick a book, and Post a blurb.

“Reading has been a fundamental part of my growth as a person over the course of my life,” said Hampton. “This is not a competition about who can read the most books. My ultimate goal with the Bluegrass Book Buddies Challenge is for Kentuckians of all ages to discover the joy of reading by having a shared reading experience with a friend or family member.”

People seeking to participate should first locate a buddy (e.g., family member, friend). Next, the buddy pair should select a book they both find interesting. Finally, at some point during their reading experience, the pair should post a blurb (i.e., picture or video with a short description) about their experience on any social media platform using one of the following hashtags: #BluegrassBookBuddies or #KYB3.

Throughout the summer, Hampton will recognize buddy pairs on her Twitter account that post blurbs using the above hashtags. Hampton has also made KYB3 posters and bookmarks available in her office for anyone who is interested in participating.
