Dr. Brian Holzer appointed president of Kindred Innovations

Chief Executive Officer William Altman will take on additional responsibility

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 30, 2017) — Kindred Healthcare, Inc. today announced the appointment of Brian Holzer, M.D., as president of Kindred Innovations, effective June 5, 2017.

Dr. Holzer will report to Benjamin A. Breier, Kindred’s President and Chief Executive Officer, and will work closely with Kindred’s Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, William Altman, who will continue to oversee the Company’s enterprise strategic plan.

Mr. Altman will take on the additional responsibility as chief of staff to Mr. Breier.

In this newly created position at Kindred, Dr. Holzer will be responsible for furthering Kindred’s portfolio of innovative post-acute care products and services on a national level. This includes Kindred’s continuum of care management, network development and product development initiatives, as well as Kindred House Calls, one of the largest home-based primary care practices in the nation.

Kindred Innovations develops and tests unique approaches to post-acute care solutions, such as a toll-free resource (1.866.KINDRED), in which calls are answered 24/7 by Registered Nurses who help patients and families navigate a confusing care system; an AfterCare Program designed to maintain communication with patients after they are discharged; and the Las Vegas, Nevada-based Silver State Accountable Care Organization (“ACO”), of which Kindred is a strategic owner and partner, that recently expanded to the Reno, Nevada, area. In August 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced that the Silver State ACO was among only 22% of the nation’s Medicare Shared Savings ACOs that generated savings for the 2015 performance year.

Dr. Holzer is joining Kindred from Highmark Health, the third largest integrated healthcare delivery and financing network in the nation. Most recently, Dr. Holzer led the formation of HM Home and Community Services (“HMHCS”) and served as President of the organization. HMHCS was established in 2016 to be an innovator in post-acute management solutions, and has since helped drive improved clinical outcomes, better patient experience and a reduced overall cost of care for a Pennsylvania ACO and a health insurer’s Medicare Advantage line of business.

Dr. Holzer initially joined Highmark Health in 2013, first overseeing post-acute care operations at the Allegheny Health Network (“AHN”), a western Pennsylvania-based integrated healthcare delivery system. At AHN, Dr. Holzer led the development and operations of AHN Healthcare@Home, resulting in a hospital system-driven continuum of care model consisting of home health, hospice, home medical equipment and home infusion. Dr. Holzer has also held positions in healthcare consulting and various strategy, operations, and sales and marketing roles in the biotechnology industry. He received a medical degree from the Drexel School of Medicine and an MBA with a major in healthcare management from the Wharton School of Business.

As Chief of Staff, Mr. Altman will serve as an extension of Mr. Breier’s office, both within Kindred and also externally. This will enable Mr. Breier to prioritize his activities and ensure that there is alignment between strategy, business operations, and public policy goals and priorities. Mr. Altman will continue to serve as Kindred’s Chief Strategy Officer and will oversee the Company’s strategic planning. He will also continue to oversee Kindred’s public policy and advocacy initiatives.

“Creating Kindred Innovations will enhance our strengths as both a provider of quality post-acute care and a manager of post-acute care by deploying a variety of products and services designed to improve quality, outcomes and the customer experience while lowering the total cost of care,” said Mr. Breier. “Brian has the expertise to help us continue delivering integrated solutions to support patients and manage their care across the continuum, resulting in high-quality outcomes. His breadth of healthcare experience and track record of driving innovations in the post-acute care space will support Kindred’s ability to transform how care is delivered and, ultimately, improve the patient experience.”

Mr. Breier added, “Bill has provided valuable leadership to Kindred over many years and his appointment as Chief of Staff will allow us to continue to grow and position the Company to prepare for and take advantage of a changing healthcare landscape where value-based care and payment will require different solutions.”
