Centre College Associate Athletic Director Andrew Gavin was selected as one of five Division III representatives to the NCAA’s 2017 Pathway Program for athletic administrative senior staff members to elevate their careers.
The Pathway Program is designed for those who have committed to becoming directors of athletics and provides an unprecedented opportunity to gain insight on every facet of an athletics department. It prepares these individuals to become well-rounded leaders who are equipped with the tools an effective athletics director needs.
“It is an honor to represent Centre as a participant in the NCAA Pathway Program,” Gavin said. “This is a unique opportunity for me to learn from leaders from across college athletics, and I am blessed and humbled by my inclusion. I thank Dr. Roush and Brad Fields for supporting my interest and participation in this program.”
Since joining the Centre Athletics staff in May 2015, the school has seen a substantial increase in athletics fundraising and corporate sponsorships. In addition, Gavin guides the Centre Athletics external relations team, including the communications, marketing and community service efforts. In his time, Gavin has overseen the creation of the Colonels Kids Club, the Centre Athletics Awards Show, the launch of the Centre Sports Network and CentreGear.com. Gavin also secured a two-year grant from the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship Program.
On campus, Gavin serves on the College’s Planning and Priorities Committee, Enrollment Management Committee, Bicentennial Committee, Athletics and Recreation Committee and the ad hoc committee on athletics space.
The Pathway Program kicks off for all divisions during a weeklong session in late June at the NCAA national office in Indianapolis. Throughout the year, program dates and locations will then cater to each division’s needs, such as participating in governance meetings and media and interview training. Skill building will take place in the areas of values clarification, leadership, media training, diversity and inclusion. Participants will also get an in-depth look and introduction to search firms and the hiring process within college athletics.
The program is designed to elevate those currently in senior-level positions within athletics administration to the next step as a director of athletics. This year-long program is an intensive, experiential learning opportunity for selected participants representing NCAA Divisions I, II and III.
In addition to the in-person programming throughout the year, participants will be paired with both a presidential and director of athletics mentor. The year will conclude with recognitions at the annual NACDA convention luncheon.
Since its inception in 1997, the Pathway Program (formerly the Fellows Program) has produced more than 100 alumni. Nearly 25 percent of the participants have gone on to become directors of athletics, while more than 60 percent have received promotions in their careers.
