AP: Google Fiber to begin construction in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE — Google Fiber will begin building its ultrafast network in a Kentucky city, according to an article by The Associated Press.

The Courier-Journal reports the company shared the news with Louisville officials on Wednesday. Grace Simrall, technology czar for the mayor, says the historic Portland neighborhood will be the first area to receive the high-speed internet technology.

Metro Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton, who represents the Portland neighborhood, says the area desperately needs high-speed internet access and that it will help spur economic development.

Google Fiber said in a statement that the company will be filling request for permits with the city and the neighborhoods will be notified in advance when they can expect service.

The fiber-to-home construction will take place on June 13.
