HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (Sept. 15, 2017) — Northern Kentucky University’s Board of Regents Chair Rich Boehne was honored with the 2017 Outstanding Alumnus of Kentucky (OAK) Award. Boehne received the award Tuesday at the Governor’s Conference on Postsecondary Education Trusteeship conference in Louisville.
The OAK Award honors outstanding graduates for achieving statewide or national recognition in their careers and for exhibiting a lifelong affection for both their alma mater and Kentucky. Recipients were nominated by their university or college presidents.
“Rich is the personal embodiment of this award, and I nominated him because I cannot imagine anyone being more deserving of this prestigious recognition,” said Gerry St. Amand, NKU interim president. “Rich reached the pinnacle of his profession when he served as President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of the E.W. Scripps Company. And though he is one of the most prominent media executives in the country, he has not forgotten his roots; he has been enormously generous with his time and financial resources in his continuing life of engagement with our university. And for that we are deeply grateful.”
Boehne retired from his CEO role at Scripps in early August. He continues to serve the company as chair of the board of directors. In addition to his work at Scripps and NKU, he serves on the board of the global news organization, the Associated Press.
Boehne holds a bachelor of arts in communication from NKU. In addition to serving as Board of Regents chair, Boehne is also a member of the Foundation Board of Directors. He has received NKU’s Outstanding Alumnus Award and the Lincoln Award. The Radio Television Digital News Foundation presented Boehne with the First Amendment Leadership Award for his work on free speech.
“This year’s honorees are truly exceptional, and we are delighted to honor them for their many contributions to enrich the lives of our students and campus communities,” said Bob King, Council on Postsecondary Education president.
David Beck and Michael Mountjoy were also honored with the 2017 Oak Award. The award ceremony followed remarks by Governor Matt Bevin.
