KY EXCEL welcomes Leggett & Platt as master member

Facility goes above and beyond in environmental stewardship

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 22, 2017) — Leggett & Platt, a partner member since 2012 and leading producer of drawn steel wire, has upgraded its Winchester facility membership in the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection’s (DEP) environmental leadership program, KY EXCEL, to a master member – the program’s highest level.

KY EXCEL recognizes public, corporate and private sector organizations that act to improve Kentucky’s diverse and unique environment through environmental leadership.

“We are proud to welcome Leggett and Platt as a master member of KY EXCEL,” said Paulette Akers, director of the Division of Compliance Assistance. “The stewardship they demonstrate in their facility as well as their community is a wonderful example for facilities all over the commonwealth.”

Leggett & Platt has implemented several projects during its time as a KY EXCEL member. In the last year, Leggett & Platt has installed LED lighting in all innerspring Spuhl equipment, creating a better-lit and safer environment. This reduced its yearly utilities by $7,028 per year. Community projects have included the Clark County community clean-up event, 4-H Adventures in Agriculture day camp and regular school visits through the Partners in Education program.

Leggett & Platt also has a commitment to re-use and recycle by donating pallets to make benches for the Better Block Winchester event and annual Beer Cheese Festival. The company also participated in the local YMCA Scarecrow Festival making scarecrows out of pallets and crafts from innerspring wire.

Leggett & Platt employees serve as career mentors to community college students, providing opportunities for a work/education program that they hope will get the younger generation interested in science and engineering careers. They also have mentored other facilities and KY EXCEL members, looking to model their ideas for a better work environment. This excellence in leadership has won Leggett & Platt three KY DEP Environmental Excellence Awards over the last five years and they have plans for more facility and community projects in the next year.

Launched by DEP in 2006, KY EXCEL is a voluntary program open to any individual, organization, community or business to improve and protect Kentucky’s environment above and beyond the state’s environmental requirements.
