FRANKFORT, Ky. (Dec. 6, 2017) – The Hart County and Owensboro Independent public school districts have been named to the 8th annual Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Roll, the College Board announced today.
These Kentucky districts are among 447 public and private districts in the U.S. and Canada that have shown a commitment to expanding access to AP coursework while also improving student performance. Inclusion on the AP District Honor Roll is based on three years of AP data (2015-17) during which a district must:
• increase participation/access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts; at least 6 percent in medium districts; and at least 11 percent in small districts
• increase or maintain the percentages of exams taken by African American, Hispanic/Latino and American Indian/Alaska Native students
• improve performance levels when comparing the percentage of students in 2017 scoring a 3 or higher to those in 2015, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70 percent of its AP students are scoring a 3 or higher.
“I am happy to be able to recognize two school districts that are doing such fine work in ensuring the benefits of Advanced Placement classes are open to every student,” said Kentucky’s Commissioner of Education Stephen Pruitt. “The students who challenge themselves by enrolling in AP classes and taking the test at the end of the course are helping to ensure that they are ready to meet the challenges of higher education or the workforce after graduation. I’d also like to congratulate these districts for seeing the need to provide rigorous opportunities for all of our students.”
“Congratulations to all the educators and administrators in these districts who have worked to clear a path for more students of all backgrounds to participate and succeed in AP,” said Trevor Packer, head of AP and Instruction at the College Board. “These educators and administrators are fostering a culture in their schools and classrooms that allows students to face new challenges and build the confidence to succeed.”
College Board offers more than 30 AP courses, each of which connects directly to a wide variety of college majors and careers.
