WUKY partners with God’s Pantry to fight child hunger during holidays

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 15, 2017) – WUKY has partnered with God’s Pantry Food Bank, along with, KEBCO Inc., Stewart Perry of State Farm Insurance and UK Federal Credit Union to fight child hunger during this holiday season.

For every donation made to WUKY until Dec. 31, KEBCO Inc., Stewart Perry and UK Federal Credit Union will each fill a backpack for a child in need through God’s Pantry Food Bank’s Backpack Program. These generous sponsors will fill up to 1,500 backpacks for at-risk children with the support of WUKY listeners.

The poverty rate in Fayette County is 21 percent. The child food insecurity rate nationwide is 17 percent. Another tool, Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap, reports that 10,490 food insecure children live in Lexington.

God’s Pantry Food Bank distributes up to 860 bags of food weekly. Each bag contains 7-10 kid-friendly items of food such as a protein-rich main dish (macaroni and cheese or chicken and rice), shelf-stable milk, fruit cups, granola bars, and other items chosen by a registered dietitian.
