LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 20, 2017) – The Lexington Parking Authority (LPA) announced today that 8,431 pounds (or 4.2 tons) of food was donated during their 2017 Food for Fines campaign. That equals over 7,600 food items, which “paid” for $11,400 in citations. All donations received by LexPark were given to God’s Pantry Food Bank.
“Fighting hunger is a community effort and partnering with organizations like LexPark helps the Food Bank feed those in Fayette County who are in need,” said Michael Halligan, CEO of God’s Pantry Food Bank. “Some of the 8,431 pounds of food donated is already in our Fayette County pantries and quite possibly on the tables of families today. We are grateful for another successful year and appreciate LexPark turning a possible frustration into an opportunity to give joy and food during the holiday season.”
Customers were encouraged to bring in 10 cans of food and receive $15 off a parking citation. “Food for Fines” ran from Nov. 20 through Dec. 15.
“Our thanks goes out to the local media who helped spread the word about this program,” said Gary Means, Lexington Parking Authority executive director. “During the past four years our customers have brought in more than 16 tons of food to help those in need in Central Kentucky.”
