Southbound Interstate 65 to be closed this weekend

Roadway between downtown and I-264 will be closed for paving

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 19, 2012) – Paving of the final asphalt surface on the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 is scheduled for the weekend of July 20-23. To expedite the work, southbound I-65 will be completely closed from I-64 in downtown Louisville to I-264 (mile points 136.4 to 131.2). This road closure is scheduled from 7 p.m. Friday, July 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 23.

“As was done with the paving on northbound I-65 this past weekend, complete closure of the interstate will be utilized to pave the southbound lanes,” said Matt Bullock, chief district engineer for the Department of Highways, Louisville District.

“This process provides a better quality product on the roadway. All three driving lanes will be paved simultaneously, allowing the joint between lanes to be sealed up while the asphalt is still hot enough to be compacted. Otherwise, that joint will be susceptible to cracking and forming potholes,” Bullock said.

All entrance and exit ramps on southbound I-65 in the project area will be closed during paving.

During the closure of southbound I-65, motorists will be detoured via westbound I-64 to eastbound I-264, which connects with southbound I-65.
