State human rights commission to host fair housing training session in Berea

BEREA, Ky. (July 24, 2012) — The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights and the Berea Human Rights Commission on Tuesday, July 31 are sponsoring training on the Kentucky Fair Housing Act. The training will take place at the Berea City Hall, 212 Chestnut Street, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Real estate licensees, landlords, social service providers and government employees are strongly encouraged to attend. The training is open to the public.

The fair housing training is part of the ongoing statewide campaign to educate the public about federal and Kentucky fair housing laws. Recent statistics have shown that discriminatory practices based on disability are on the rise. The U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has also said that denying housing or evicting a victim of domestic violence may provide grounds for filing a discrimination complaint based on sex (gender).

The training in Berea will provide information about fair housing laws, reasonable accommodations and modifications for qualified individuals with a disability, the new HUD LGBT Rule, which prohibits certain housing providers from discriminating against individuals on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, and the Uniform Residential Landlord and Tenant Act, which outlines the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants.

The Kentucky Human Rights Commission is the state government agency that enforces the Kentucky Civil Rights Act and federal civil rights laws.

The Kentucky Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination in public accommodations, employment, housing, and financial transactions on the bases of race, color, religion, national origin, disability and sex.

Discrimination also is prohibited on the basis of familial status in housing, the basis of age (40 or over) in employment, and the basis of a person’s tobacco-smoking status in employment.
