MURRAY, Ky. (April 5, 2018) — Dr. Don Tharpe has been selected to receive the 2018 African American Heritage Lifetime Achievement Award at the 13th annual Diversity Achievement Award reception Friday, April 6, in Murray State University’s Curris Center Banquet Room beginning at 6 p.m.
Tharpe’s career in association management spans more than 30 years. Tharpe served as chief operations officer of the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Board of Standards, Inc., a non-profit organization located in Washington, D.C., that serves the public interest by promoting the value of professional, competent and ethical financial planning services as represented by those who have attained the CFP certification.
Tharpe also served as president and CEO of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation, a U.S.-based public charity that works with the Pan American Health Organization and other strategic partners to mobilize resources and jointly address key public health priorities.
Tharpe served as president and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which was established in 1976 and is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy, research and educational institute focused on leadership education, public health and economic development for African Americans and other underserved populations. Prior to that appointment, Tharpe was executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Council on Foundations. The Council on Foundations is a nonprofit membership association of more than 2,000 grant-making foundations and corporations.
An alumnus of Murray State University, Tharpe, ’74, ’75, is being recognized for his service and leadership to the Commonwealth of Kentucky as well as various state and national associations. Tharpe currently serves on the Murray State University Board of Regents.
