FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 9, 2012) — The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) will display artifacts and exhibits related to the Civil War and Kentucky’s military history at the Kentucky State Fair, Aug. 16-26 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.
The KHS will be located in South Wing B in the special exhibition areas “War Hawks & Valiant Volunteers: Kentuckians in the War of 1812” and “United We Stand, Divided We Fall: Kentucky & the Civil War.” Artifacts and touch-screens are on loan from the “Kentucky Military Treasures” exhibition at the Kentucky Military History Museum, which is currently closed to the public and undergoing renovations until spring 2013. Also on display will be three Museums-to-Go panel exhibits about the State Arsenal in Frankfort, the War of 1812 and the Civil War.
Artifacts include a scabbard and presentation tomahawk once owned by Richard M. Johnson, a U.S. congressman at the outbreak of the War of 1812, who left his seat to train and lead a regiment of Kentucky Mounted Rifles. Civil War artifacts include Gen. John Hunt Morgan’s sword and Colt revolvers once owned by Maj. Gen. John C. Breckinridge.
KHS staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the artifacts, the KHS history campus in downtown Frankfort, KHS’s new “ExploreKYHistory” smartphone app and the services KHS provides every day for students, teachers, researchers and all Kentuckians. A limited number of “I Love Kentucky History” buttons will be available to those stopping by the area.
