WKU reports increases in summer session, online and study abroad programs

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (Aug. 23, 2012) — WKU Summer Sessions had a successful 2012 year, reporting a total of 6,569 students taking classes this summer.

“This is a big accomplishment, because many universities around the nation saw a decrease in summer enrollment,” said Alicia Bingham, WKU Summer Sessions Coordinator.

Fifty-six additional students enrolled in summer courses this year compared to last year, she said.

Online enrollment saw a significant increase of 5.4 percent, with 6,190 course enrollments. Study abroad also increased, up 4.2 percent with 1,073 course enrollments.

According to Bingham, more seniors enrolled in summer sessions this year and took more hours. The number of seniors who took six or more hours in summer grew 40 percent from 2011 to 2012, totaling 1,067, while the number of seniors who took nine or more hours also grew by 40 percent from 2011 to 2012, for a total of 349.

“We attribute most of this growth to the new summer scholarship program,” Bingham said.

The summer scholarship was offered to WKU students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher who took six or more hours. The scholarship provided 1,100 students with one hour of tuition at the undergrad Kentucky resident rate.
