Kuhlman Electric Corp. has announced plans to close its Versailles manufacturing plant by the end of the year, eliminating 185 jobs. The closing is tied to Kuhlman’s decision to sell part of its transformer business to Power Partners Inc. of Athens, Ga. With that portion of production no longer taking place in Versailles, Kuhlman officials said in light of the weak economy and sluggish housing marketing, it was no longer feasible to keep the facility operational. The production lines not involved in the Power Partners sale will be moved to other facilities owned by Kuhlman’s parent company, ABB. Kuhlman’s headquarter operations will remain in Versailles.
