KHSAA votes to move state football championships to Kroger Field in Lexington

Girls basketball finals to remain at NKU in 2018

FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 11, 2017) — The board of control for the Kentucky High School Athletic Association voted to authorize the commissioner to enter into contract negotiations for the 2017 and 2018 State Football Finals with the University of Kentucky to play championship games at Kroger Field, formerly Commonwealth Stadium.

logoThe board also heard proposals from Bowling Green and Highland Heights. For the past eight years football finals were played at Houchens-LT Smith Stadium on the campus of Western Kentucky University, but the last two years the order of games was reshuffled at the last minute because WKU advanced to the C-USA Championship game.

The state football finals were last played in Lexington in 1976.

The board also elected to keep the girls 2018 Sweet 16 basketball tournament at BB&T Arena at Northern Kentucky University, before moving the event to Rupp Arena for 2019 and 2020.

The board also set the inaugural KHSAA State Dance Competition for Dec. 16 at the new Frederick Douglass High School in Lexington.
