Midway University announces record incoming class

Third straight year of undergraduate enrollment growth
After having been a women-only school for more than 160 years, Midway University in Woodford County went coed in 2016.

MIDWAY, Ky. — Midway University had a record enrollment in its undergraduate class for the third consecutive year. This year Midway welcomed its largest ever incoming class of 267 undergraduates (a 31 percent increase over last year), with total undergraduate daytime enrollment now at 571 students, the highest in recent history.

The university’s total enrollment at census was 1,668 across all student populations compared to 1,217 in 2017.

“We are pleased to continue to see our undergraduate enrollments grow,” said Dr. John P. Marsden, president, Midway University. “It is an exciting and transformational time to be at Midway.”

Demographics of the new daytime students include 60 percent female/40 percent male. The 267 students come from 26 states, 57 Kentucky counties and two students from Colombia and France. The overall undergraduate female/male ratio is now 63/37 percent respectively.

Another significant portion of the increase in enrollment this year is due to dual credit. With new partnerships established with high schools in Franklin, Henry and Woodford Counties, the university now has 409 students enrolled in dual credit courses this semester.

“I want to commend members of our senior staff on their hard work. Rusty Kennedy, assistant vice president for athletics and admissions, worked with both the admissions and coaching staff on undergraduate recruitment to bring in the largest daytime class in the school’s history,” said Marsden. “And Dr. Mary Elizabeth Stivers, vice president for academic affairs, and Dr. Johnie Dean, assistant vice president for academic affairs, worked with high schools on our Dual Credit program. Students in the area high schools will now have an opportunity to earn college credit for coursework offered through Midway and become familiar with what we have to offer.

“Our overall growth is due to coeducation in 2016, expansion of athletics, dual credit enrollments, business partnerships for our evening and online programs, and team efforts across all departments on campus.”

This quick growth has the university playing catch up on facilities. The fundraising project, “The Campaign of Opportunities,” should wrap up this fall and a groundbreaking will be held for the new Field House and Baseball Stadium projects. With some of the funds already raised, renovations to the Belle Wisdom Residence Hall took place this summer with every bathroom getting a complete makeover.
