The campground at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park near Dawson Springs has received $1.1 million in state funding that will be used to add 10 to 15 full-service sites for horse camping and other campground improvements. The campground will serve as the trailhead to approximately 40 miles of equestrian trails within the adjacent Pennyrile State Forest. Two other state parks – Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park and Taylorsville Lake State Park – have horse campsites available and the state’s Department of Parks is also adding horse camping sites at Carter Caves State Resort Park near Olive Hill. Funding for the projects comes from a $60 million bond pool that was approved several years ago by the Kentucky General Assembly for state park improvements.
