LEXINGTON, Ky. — Dr. Ali Elfandi has joined CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Cardiology in Lexington as an interventional cardiologist. Elfandi has practiced medicine in Libya and the United States for 12 years and is looking forward to returning to Lexington to raise his family and develop strong bonds with his patients.
“I want my patients to know that as a physician, we like to be very personal,” said Elfandi. “It’s not always about prescribing a medication. It’s about developing a connection, a bond with patients, where they can trust me and I can trust them.”
During the first rotation of his medical internship, Elfandi discovered his passion was cardiology. He says he enjoys this field because “it’s a very dynamic specialty.”
Elfandi was born and raised in Columbia, Mo., while his father was receiving his PhD, and later moved with his family to Libya where he finished high school and medical school. He earned his bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery degrees from the University of Tripoli Faculty of Medicine.
Elfandi completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Tripoli in Libya, and at the Overlook Medical Center – Thomas Jefferson SKMC in Summit, N.J., where he was named chief resident. He completed his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Morristown Medical Center – Thomas Jefferson SKMC in Morristown, N.J., and a fellowship in interventional cardiology at UMMS-Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. Elfandi is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology.
When Elfandi is not getting to know his patients, he enjoys staying active outdoors with his wife and their three young children, hiking, biking and traveling on road trips. He also enjoys cooking. He’s looking forward to being part of the Lexington community again, after briefly living here from 2011-12.
“I always had this idea that I would return to Lexington to live and work,” said Elfandi. “It’s a great place to raise a family, and I’m looking forward to enjoying all that the city has to offer.”
