Tower Automotive has announced plans to expand its automotive parts production facility in Bardstown. The company is adding six metal presses at the plant and will hire about 50 more welders. The Bardstown facility, which opened in 1994 and currently employs some 460 people, produces automotive metal structural components and assemblies for a client list that includes Ford, Nissan and Toyota, among others.

American Greetings Corp., Bardstown’s largest employer, is laying off up to 120 of its 500 employees as part of a companywide cost-cutting program. The greeting card company is also reducing its workforce at manufacturing and distribution facilities in Arkansas and Tennessee and will close 60 of its stores nationwide by the end of February. The announcements come only weeks after the company laid off 275 employees, including 175 people at its Cleveland headquarters, from its total workforce of 18,000.
