PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) is partnering with Big Sandy Community and Technical College to offer free GED classes in conjunction with Kentucky Skills U. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. at CAP’s Foley Community Center in Martin, Kentucky located at 6134 KY-80, Martin, KY 41649.
Kentucky Skills U provides free adult education services in all 120 counties to help Kentuckians obtain a GED. Through Kentucky Skills U, Kentuckians can gain reading, math, and communications skills that place them on a path to higher education and training and earn certifications to move ahead in their careers.
“CAP’s mission is to meet needs in the community. Education is as important as food or clothing because people cannot better themselves or their situations if they do not have the education to do so,” said Kelli Bryant, coordinator of CAP’s Foley Community Center. “Life happens and sometimes life will lead you away from school before you can graduate. This program offered completely free, gives people an opportunity to get their diploma so they can get back on track and make a better life for their family.”
About 317,000 working-age Kentuckians do not have a high school or GED diploma. The mission of Kentucky Skills U is to work with Kentuckians to improve their quality of life through education, training, and employment so they can take care of themselves and their families and help their communities and the state’s economies expand and thrive.
“Partnerships between Big Sandy and organizations like CAP are a vital part of how we serve the people of Eastern Kentucky,” said Jennifer Crum, an adult education specialist with Big Sandy. “This work cannot be done by a single person or single organization. Partnerships like these allow us to work together for a common purpose, to have a transformational impact in the community.”
The Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) and Kentucky Skills U have also partnered to offer an innovative GED program where students can co-enroll in both Skills U and short-term KCTCS classes to earn a GED plus a college certificate tuition-free under the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship Program.
CAP’s Foley Community Center is available to the community for a minimal fee for large events like basketball tournaments or small events like a class reunion or intimate wedding ceremony.
