City cited for providing information, accessibility to citizens
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Nov. 16, 2012) — When it comes to using technology to communicate with citizens, Louisville Metro Government is the top city government in America, according to the latest survey from a national technology group.
The 2012 Digital Cities Survey, conducted by the Center for Digital Government, has Louisville first, ahead of cities such as Boston, Seattle, Charlotte and Sacramento.
It’s the second top-technology ranking this year for Louisville Metro: the city’s website, www.louisvilleky.gov, earned a number one ranking in the Best of the Web awards, only the second time a city has taken first in both surveys in the same year from the Center for Digital Government.
“This latest ranking is a direct result of our focus on harnessing technology to increase efficiency and provide better services and information to our citizens,” Mayor Greg Fischer said. “Our technology team and departments throughout city government are doing an excellent job of looking for these opportunities.”
In addition to the city’s strong public website, the survey noted the implementation this year of the new LouieStat program, which uses data from various Metro Government departments to track what the government is doing, how it’s doing it, and how it can improve. The survey also lauded the city for sharing more data online through a new portal (http://data.louisvilleky.gov), for aggressive development of mobile apps that help citizens connect with city government and for taking a comprehensive, government-wide approach to using technology.
“One of the biggest successes we’ve had this past year has been our effort to make sure our IT team fully participates in all technology discussions throughout city departments and programs,” said Beth Niblock, chief information officer for Metro Government. “This is helping build more effective solutions and increase efficiency.”
The Digital Cities Survey is in its 12th year and looks at the results city governments achieve in using technology in areas such as shared services, open data, mobile applications, cyber security, disaster recovery, cloud computing and e-government. Hundreds of cities participated in this year’s survey. The top 10 were narrowed down and judged by senior fellows and executives of the Center for Digital Government.
