Financial problems resulted in Owensboro’s largest hotel closing abruptly last month, leaving approximately 200 people without jobs and the city scrambling to find accommodations for visitors and groups scheduled to stay at the 550-room Executive Inn Rivermont. Among the events scheduled to be held in Owensboro this summer are a national softball tournament, an international writers festival, a national truck show and a bluegrass music festival. Sporting events alone are slated to bring more than 45,000 visitors to the area. The Owensboro-Daviess County Convention and Visitors Bureau has been contacting hotels in Evansville, Ind., Madisonville, Ky., and other nearby communities in an effort to find enough rooms to accommodate those who had reservations at the Rivermont.

Specialty Foods Group Inc. has been awarded more than $1 million in Kentucky Agricultural Development Funds to expand its facility in Owensboro. Specialty Foods, the parent company of Field/Fischer, plans to use the funds to purchase equipment needed to produce up to 20 million pounds per year of natural and processed beef, pork and poultry. The expansion has created 30 new jobs at the facility and could eventually bring up to 40 additional jobs.
