LOUISVILLE, Ky. — AARP Kentucky seeks applications for its next State President, a volunteer position that helps guide the advocacy, outreach and community building AARP does in the state.
The State President is a key partner and counsel to the Kentucky State Director. We’re looking for an individual who is passionate about social change, truly cares about the AARP mission, understands and can communicate the Association’s policy positions, and is inspired by the exceptional work of AARP volunteers across the Bluegrass.
“At AARP Kentucky, a key part of our team is our volunteers,” said Charlotte Whittaker, AARP Kentucky’s volunteer State President. “We have more than 110 volunteers around the state working on various advocacy issues and local outreach.”
“The state president position is essentially our lead volunteer, acting as a partner to the state director and state office staff while helping to manage our volunteer activities and engagement. The volunteer state president acts as a spokesperson and one of the faces of AARP Kentucky at events and sometimes with the media,” said Whittaker.
AARP Kentucky’s core group of volunteers actively engages in advocacy issues at the state and federal levels. Our volunteers testify on bills at the state legislature and bring concerns and issues to the state’s Congressional Delegation. Other volunteers share information and resources, often in their own communities, on topics like family caregiving, fraud prevention, livable communities, Veterans, and Social Security; while also leading fun events like Movies for Grownups; managing information tables at community events; and working with local officials on making communities more livable places where people can age in place.
Primary responsibilities for the volunteer state president include:
- Working with the state director provides vision and leadership on AARP activities.
- Chairs the state Executive Council, a volunteer advisory committee.
- Works with the state director and the Executive Council to develop the framework for state strategic planning and coordination of AARP activities.
- Assists in the recruitment of other volunteers.
Qualifications sought:
- A commitment to the goals and priorities of AARP.
- Demonstrates strategic thinking and planning abilities.
- Has proven leadership and team-building abilities.
- Shows strong interpersonal skills — understanding group dynamics and skill in facilitating groups.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- AARP membership is required.
A state president’s term is two years and can be renewed twice but not to exceed six years.
