LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation, on behalf of the Women’s Hospital at Saint Joseph East, has received a $125,000 grant from WHAS Crusade for Children that will be used to purchase new equipment to enhance care for babies born prematurely and those with special needs.

“We are so grateful for the support of WHAS Crusade for Children,” said Delaine Thiel, CFRE, vice president of philanthropy, CHI Saint Joseph Health Foundations. “This grant will allow us to purchase needed equipment that will enhance our ability to provide the best care for our tiniest patients.”

The grant will fund the replacement of vital monitors and warmers within the Birthing Center to ensure that the hospital can continue to provide the highest level of care to patients 28 weeks or older in the Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The new equipment will also help to improve the care of infants suffering from neonatal abstinence syndrome and other special needs.

“Nearly 1,700 babies are born at Women’s Hospital at Saint Joseph East each year, and last year, more than 14% of those babies needed specialized care in a NICU,” said Jennifer Nolan, president, Saint Joseph East. “Thanks to support from the WHAS Crusade for Children, we will have the most up-to-date equipment to care for them.”

“We are proud to assist the Women’s Hospital at Saint Joseph East in its mission to provide the absolute best care for newborns,” said Dawn Lee, President, and CEO of the WHAS Crusade for Children. “This funding will help ensure that the hospital has the resources to provide the best available care for the most vulnerable patients in the NICU.”

The Women’s Hospital at Saint Joseph East is the only freestanding Kentucky hospital dedicated to women’s and neonatal health services and provides a full range of services, including labor and delivery, gynecology, and neonatal intensive care.
