Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital earns National Re-Accreditation from the Commission on Cancer

SOMERSET, Ky. — Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital (LCRH), a leading healthcare institution serving our community, is delighted to announce a significant achievement in cancer care. The LCRH Cancer Center Program has been awarded a re-accreditation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a prestigious quality program established by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

This accreditation solidifies LCRH’s commitment to delivering top-tier cancer care by meeting 38 stringent quality care standards. The hospital’s Cancer Program has consistently demonstrated dedication to a multidisciplinary approach, prioritizing high-quality, patient-centered cancer care. This achievement underscores LCRH’s unwavering commitment to enhancing patient outcomes and improving the quality of life for all individuals battling cancer.

Robert Parker, CEO of Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, expressed his gratitude to the LCRH team and to the regional supporting organizations for this significant milestone, stating, “We are so proud of our Cancer Program and its emphasis on research, clinical investigations, prevention, and control. This accreditation is a testament to our comprehensive approach to cancer care, ensuring that our program offers the full range of services required to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and support patients and their families.”

The hospital’s Cancer Program takes a collaborative approach to cancer care, partnering with patients from diagnosis through survivorship. This patient-centric methodology ensures that individuals receive support throughout what can be a daunting journey, reassuring them that their care remains consistent and comprehensive every step of the way.

As part of the continuing focus on making communities healthier, LCRH is a proud partner of the UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network, which provides patients with enhanced access to high-quality cancer care. The UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network enhances access to high-quality cancer care through collaboration with community hospitals. The vision is for Kentuckians and those from surrounding states to have access to excellent cancer care.  The Markey Affiliate Network assists doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other medical staff at local hospitals that provide excellent care in their communities. When patients need care unavailable locally, they can be referred to the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington. When that happens, Markey doctors work with LCRH doctors and oncologists to minimize travel for patients and their families.  Markey also works with LCRH to plan and host many local cancer prevention events and activities, such as health fairs, cancer screening programs, and survivorship events.

Dr. Michael Citak, Chief Medical Officer of Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, emphasized the Cancer Program’s dedication to personalized care plans and community collaboration. He said, “We understand the significance of treating the whole person, not just the condition. Our patient navigation program has allowed us to forge partnerships with local oncologists, radiologists, and other community physicians to manage our patients’ care collectively. We’re committed to expanding our services and physical presence to serve better and reach more patients.”

CoC-accredited facilities diagnose and/or treat more than 70 percent of all newly diagnosed patients with cancer. The CoC Accreditation Program provides the framework for accredited facilities to further enhance the quality of patient care through various cancer-related programs that focus on the full spectrum of cancer care, including prevention, early diagnosis, cancer staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, life-long follow-up for recurrent disease, and end-of-life care.

Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital remains committed to providing exceptional healthcare services to our community, and this accreditation further demonstrates our dedication to advancing cancer care and improving the lives of those we serve.
