UK, UofL keep rivalry alive with more than two decades of Gift of Life College Challenge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville keep their rivalry and competitive spirit alive while inspiring thousands of people to join the Organ Donor Registry with the 22nd year of the Gift of Life College Challenge.

Starting November 1, in the span of four weeks, both universities will engage in a spirited competition to determine which school’s community can register the highest number of new organ, eye and tissue donors. Since its inception in 2001, the Gift of Life Challenge has seen college students, faculty, coaches and staff actively promote organ donation registration through on-campus events, social media campaigns, newsletter features and donor registry sign-up stations.

“By registering as an organ donor, you can be someone’s ultimate MVP, just like a clutch player who makes the winning shot in the final seconds. It’s your chance to be a hero off the court,” said Shelley Snyder, Executive Director of Donate Life Kentucky. “Our mission is to make a difference in the lives of those in need through organ and tissue donation and transplantation. As the number of registered organ donors increases, so does the potential for saving lives. In this competition, there are no losers; every name added to the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry offers hope to those awaiting lifesaving organ transplants.”

Each university is provided with a specific registration link for the donor registry to facilitate the sign-up process. The challenge’s conclusion will see the winning school presented with a trophy during the Battle of the Bluegrass men’s basketball game on December 21.

In 2022, the University of Louisville won the Gift of Life Challenge, thanks in part to a post on Twitter from the men’s head basketball coach, Kenny Payne, encouraging Cards fans to register, resulting in more than 400 individuals joining the registry. Several UK student groups are already gearing up to help this year, including UK’s Greek life and a new student group called CATS for KODA.“Don’t wait on the sidelines – step up, get in the game and become a part of the ultimate team for humanity. Organ donors are game-changers and make a difference that lasts well beyond the final whistle,” says Snyder.
