CLERMONT, Ky. — Nature’s dormant season has begun, providing sweeping views of Bernheim’s knobby landscape. It’s a great time to get outdoors and discover the architecture of the bare trees, find calm in the chilly air, and join Bernheim in various festivities.

The highlights of Bernheim’s events and programming throughout December are listed below. Visit bernheim.org/events for a complete list.

Holiday Open House: Enjoy a festive day shopping for your friends and family at Bernheim’s Visitor Center on Saturday, December 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enjoy the holiday spirit with hot mulled cider and refreshments, hourly door prize drawings, holiday specials, and more.

Please browse our selection of locally made crafts, Kentucky Proud® goods, and other unique gifts for the nature lover. Bernheim members receive a special discount in the Gift Shop throughout the day.

Citizen Science – For the Birds:

Winter is a marvelous time for enjoying birds. In this workshop on Saturday, December 9, from 10 a.m. to noon, you’ll discover how your birding observations and recordings can capture critical data supporting scientific research on bird conservation. Volunteer Naturalists Jim and Karen Scout will help you discover the joy of birding and being a part of the citizen science community.

Meeting Trees in Winter:

Winter can be a challenging time to identify trees. Still, Bernheim’s Interpretive Programs Manager, Wren Smith, will share some tips to help you recognize and appreciate many of our native trees even when their leaves aren’t talking. Join us for this winter adventure on Saturday, November 2, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

First Sunday Nature Stroll – Tales from the Trees:

The barer landscape in winter provides a new lens into the forest. See the architecture of tree trunks, branches, and roots free of foliage, and hear the tales the trees tell in the quiet of winter. Join a Bernheim Naturalist on Sunday, December 3, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for this journey into the dormant woods.

The cost is $10 for Bernheim members and $15 for non-members. Registration and payment are due by 4 p.m. the day prior. Visit Bernheim.org or call (502) 215-7155 to register. No pets are allowed. Children ages six and up only, please.

Trail Discovery Hike – Cull Hollow:

Explore miles of Bernheim hiking trails with Volunteer Naturalist Doug Wilson and Bernheim’s Research Coordinator, Kelly Vowels, on Sunday, December 3, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for this rare opportunity to explore the area of Cave Hollow. This is a vital piece of habitat within the Greater Bernheim landscape, containing significant cave habitat and the headwaters of two streams, Long Lick and Pine Creek.

ECO Kids Discovery Days:

The E-C-O stands for Every Child Outside, and that’s exactly where kids can be found during ECO Kids Discovery Days. Discovery Days take place the first and third Saturday of each month near Bernheim’s Visitor Center and may include:

Hands-On Discovery Stations from 1 to 4 p.m.

Hike of the Day, led by a Bernheim guide, starts at the Visitor Center at 2 p.m. and runs 45-60 minutes.

Pop-Up Story Circles because everything and everyone has a story. Watch for our storytelling and story-sharing circles.
