LEXINGTON, Ky. — New research has revealed the best states for a date night with romance on Valentine’s Day, with Hawaii topping the list.
Experts at sexual wellness site Bedbible.com analyzed several categories using Tripadvisor.com data, including the number of hotels rated four stars and above, the number of restaurants rated five stars, and the number of hotels with mentions of ‘romantic’ in reviews. Each state was awarded a score for every category to determine the final ranking.
“Valentine’s Day is a special occasion for couples to celebrate their love for one another, and it’s interesting to see which states have landed in the ranking and what they can offer for a romantic date night,” a spokesperson from Bedbible.com said. “While the findings reflects that each of the top 10 states provide couples with different opportunities to add more romance to the evening, it’s insightful to discover their high-scoring categories to help people plan their dates accordingly, from Hawaii’s luxury hotels to Colorado’s romantic restaurants.”
“However, whether your state has made the top ten or not,” the spokesperson said, “Valentine’s Day is all about quality time with one another and showing appreciation to your partner, regardless of how you celebrate.”

Hawaii tops the list as the best state for a romantic date this Valentine’s Day, with an impressive final score of 76.46. Hawaii received the highest possible score of 10 for the number of restaurants rated five stars, with there being 421 to choose from when it comes to dining with your partner. As well as this, there are 117 hotels rated 4 stars and above in Hawaii, earning another score of 10.
Vermont places second on the list, with a final score of 74.84. Like Hawaii, Vermont has plenty of restaurants to offer that are rated five stars, with there being 169 in total; so, whichever cuisine you wish to indulge in, you’re bound to be spoilt for choice.
Florida is third on the list, taking a final score of 73.56. The Sunshine State received scores of 10 in various categories, including the number of restaurants with mentions of ‘valentine’ in reviews standing at 127 in total, and the number of hotels with mentions of ‘couples’ being 241.
New York takes the fourth spot, with a final score of 66.32. New York earned a score of 10 for the number of hotels featuring ‘valentine’ in reviews, 397 to be precise, so there are plenty of romantic stays for couples to choose from on the special night.
In fifth place is Colorado, which has a final score of 66.03. Colorado received a score of 8.2 for the number of restaurants with mentions of ‘romantic’ in reviews, as well as a score of 8.17 for the number of hotels rated 4 stars and above, this being 135.
Placing sixth is Nevada, with a score of 60.85. The Silver State earned a high score of 7.87 for the number of restaurants featuring ‘couples’ in reviews and a score of 7.62 for the number of hotels with mentions of ‘adults only’ in reviews. So, Nevada citizens can relax and enjoy Valentine’s Day with their partner without any disruptions.
Seventh on the list is Maine, which has a final score of 60.32. Maine has a score of 7.56 for the number of restaurants with reviews mentioning ‘date night’, as well as a score of 7.5 for the number of restaurants rated 5 stars, which is a staggering 338.
Taking the eighth spot is California, with a final score of 57.75. The Golden State received a score of 10 for the number of hotels with ‘romantic’ in reviews, specifically 300; additionally, California boasts 138 hotels that mention ‘couples’ in reviews, resulting in a score of 8.78.
Following closely behind in ninth place is Pennsylvania, which has a final score of 54.91. There are 33 restaurants in Pennsylvania with ‘valentine’ mentioned in reviews, thus the state was awarded a score of 8.27 in this category.
Last on the Top 10 list is Oregon in tenth place, with a final score of 52.66. Oregon’s highest-scoring category was the number of restaurants rated 4 stars and above, with there being 1,067 in total in the state.
Methodology
Tripadvisor was used to analyze the following factors for each state before awarding each one an index score to determine the final ranking:
- Number of restaurants rated 5 stars
- Number of restaurants with reviews mentioning ‘romantic’
- Number of restaurants with reviews mentioning ‘couples’
- Number of restaurants with reviews mentioning ‘valentine’
- Number of restaurants with reviews mentioning ‘date night’
- Number of hotels rated 4 stars and above
- Number of hotels with reviews mentioning ‘romantic’
- Number of hotels with reviews mentioning ‘couples’
- Number of hotels with reviews mentioning ‘adults only’
- Number of hotels with reviews mentioning ‘valentine’
