Blue Moon Energy proposes $129M solar project in Harrison County

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Blue Moon Energy LLC plans to build a $129 million solar renewable electric generation facility in Harrison County, and has received support from the Kentucky Enterprise Initiative Act (KEIA).

This idea was brought to the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) on Friday, Feb. 29, for consideration of state incentives that were approved.

Blue Moon Energy LLC is a wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Recurrent Energy LLC, which is one of the world’s largest and most geographically diversified utility-scale solar and energy storage project development, ownership and operations platforms, according to information presented by KEDFA.

Recurrent Energy has completed the development of 9 GWp of solar and 3 GWh of battery storage projects across 6 continents; they are now developing the Blue Moon Solar Project, a 70 MWac solar facility in Harrison County. The project is expected to supply enough clean energy to power 14,000 households, according to PowerTechnology.com.

The project currently consists of approximately 1,581 acres, with an estimated final footprint of approximately 651 acres, and is expected to be fully operational this year, according to Recurrent Energy’s website.

Anticipated project investment includes:

  • Land
  • Building construction
  • Electronic processing equipment
  • Research and development equipment
  • Flight simulation equipment
  • Other equipment
  • Other start-up costs

The KEIA approved a total negotiated tax incentive amount of $300,000 for research and development equipment and/or electronic processing equipment.

There is an estimated cost of $969,500 for land; just over $16 million for building construction; $75.3 million for electronic processing equipment and almost $36.5 for other equipment, with an overall total of almost $129 million.

Blue Moon Energy LLC has no current existence in Kentucky, but could start creating jobs and renewable energy in Cynthiana.

Recurrent Energy is a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc, a developer of utility-scale solar and energy storage that specializes in projects that generate electricity. It has solar projects in North America and operations in the US and Canada. Recurrent Energy is headquartered in San Francisco.
