Atlas Air gets tax incentives for regional HQ at CVG

State giving $1.5M in breaks annually for 10 years under KBI program
Atlas Air operates freight flights for the Amazon Air Hub at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport.

ERLANGER, Ky. — Atlas Air, Inc., a global provider of outsourced aviation services, is considering investing $34 million into the relocation of its regional headquarters to the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport in Kenton County, Ky., which would bring some 340 jobs.

Atlas is an air cargo operator that has an ongoing relationship with Amazon Air to conduct a portion of its flights from the Amazon Air Hub at CVG. Atlas announced in October it was shifting its main headquarters in Purchase, N.Y., to White Plains, N.Y., and that i was committing to retaining 400 jobs in New York.

Atlas Air Worldwide’s companies operate the world’s largest fleet of Boeing 747 freighter aircraft and provide customers the broadest array of 747, 777, 767 and 737 aircraft for domestic, regional and international cargo and passenger operations., according to information presented at the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) board meeting in March.

Atlas received preliminary approval for this project in July 2019, and was seeking final approval to start the project. At is March meeting, KEDFA approved a Kentucky Business Investment (KBI) program tax incentive of $15 million, $1.5 million every year for 10 years, if Atlas maintains the job and wage targets set by the agreement with state government.

Atlas Air is planning to have 250 jobs in year one, and 593 by the end of the 10-year span. It will maintain an average hourly wage of $43, including employee benefits.

The special conditions listed in the KEDFA book stated that Atlas Air, Inc. will need to maintain a base employment of 150 and a statewide employment of 48.

The book also stated that since the preliminary approval, the affiliate Southern Air Inc. has been removed from the KBI project, but all other aspects remain the same.
