$3.5M coming from federal Community Project Funding process
Congressman Andy Barr announces a $3.5 million federal grant to construct a general aviation terminal at the Central Kentucky Regional Airport. Eastern Kentucky University will make an additional $1 Million investment to enhance this facility.

RICHMOND, Ky. Central Kentucky Regional Airport is getting $3.5 million in federal money to construct a general aviation terminal to accommodate the growing demands of the CKRA.

Central Kentucky Regional Airport, in Madison County, is the third busiest general aviation airport in the state and the busiest in the 6th Congressional District. It’s home to Kentucky’s only four-year aviation degree program, serving more than 400 EKU students with a 99% placement rate upon graduation.

U.S. Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) announced the federal funding Monday during a visit to the airport, saying it will come from the Fiscal Year 2024 Community Project Funding process to Eastern Kentucky University.

Eastern Kentucky University will make an additional $1 million investment to enhance this facility.

“This isn’t just an investment in infrastructure; it’s a step forward for aviation education in Kentucky. A huge thank you to everyone who worked hard behind the scenes to make this dream a reality. We can’t wait to get to work,” EKU President David McFaddin posted on his Facebook page.

The terminal’s intent is to ensure the airport can safely and effectively service the citizens, tourists, future pilots and businesses of the Commonwealth.

“With aviation serving as the number one export in Kentucky, the demand for professional flight, aerospace management, and technology is critical. Central Kentucky Regional Airport is one of the busiest in the Commonwealth and home to the only four-year aviation degree program in the state serving over 400 students,” Barr said. “I am proud to support Eastern Kentucky University’s efforts to train the future pilots and airport managers of the world. This project will also promote economic development in Madison County and the surround region.”

“As the sole four-year aviation program in the state and within one of the commonwealth’s fastest-growing counties, the Central Kentucky Regional Airport terminal plays a crucial role in meeting both our community’s academic and economic development needs,” McFaddin said. “We deeply appreciate Congressman Barr’s dedication to supporting EKU’s mission in preparing the next generation of Kentucky’s aerospace workforce.”

“On behalf of the City of Richmond and its residents, I am immensely grateful to Congressman Andy Barr for his efforts in securing critical federal funding for the new general aviation terminal at the Central Kentucky Regional Airport,” Mayor Robert Blythe said. “This substantial investment not only advances Eastern Kentucky University’s prestigious Aviation program but also promises significant economic development opportunities for our community.”

“Congressman Barr’s steadfast commitment to his constituents and the success of the Central Kentucky Regional Airport is clearly evident by his securing this significant funding for the new terminal building,” said Richmond Mayor Bruce Fraley. “Our airport is a unique example of interlocal cooperation between Madison County Fiscal Court, Eastern Kentucky University, the City of Richmond and the City of Berea, and this funding will definitely be put to good use. This investment will help the EKU aviation program grow and flourish, while having a positive economic impact on Madison County and our broader region.”

“I believe this project at the Central Kentucky Regional Airport will not only enhance regional connectivity but also stimulate economic growth and opportunities for our county,” Madison County Judge Executive Reagan Taylor said.
