Aetna makes move for Humana takeover

Louisville, Ky. – Aetna Inc. has made a proposal to acquire Louisville-based Humana Inc., according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

Citing “people familiar with the matter,” the article (subscription required) says the move was made in the “last few days.”

It is uncertain how much Aetna offered for the takeover. Humana has a market value of $30 million. Neither Humana nor Aetna is officially commenting on the development.

Humana employs about 14,000 from the Louisville, southern Indiana region and is the largest public company in Louisville.

The news comes amid lots of HMO merger speculation, with the Wall Street Journal also reporting that Anthem has made an offer to takeover CignaCorp.
