Will include 24 housing units
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 13, 2015) — As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Kentucky, First Lady Jane Beshear today joined advocates at GreenHouse17 to announce the construction of 24 new supportive housing units for survivors of domestic violence.
The housing development project, called KCADV Homes Lexington, will consist of 24 units at three locations: 12 single-story cottage-style duplexes on the GreenHouse17 campus and 12 apartments that will be rehabbed in two existing buildings located on Mackenzie Lane and Cambridge Drive in Lexington.
“During my time as First Lady, I have visited with many domestic violence survivors across Kentucky, and have recognized firsthand the critical role our state programs and local shelters play in victims’ lives,” Beshear said. “The new KCADV Homes Lexington units provide much-needed assistance to families suffering from domestic abuse, and give them the leg-up they need to eventually stand on their own. Thank you to the many partners who have worked to bring this supportive housing to central Kentucky, and make a positive impact for survivors of domestic violence.”
The new units at GreenHouse17 will be built near the organization’s working farm, and residents will have access to the agency’s services. The 12 renovated apartments are located near bus lines and in neighborhoods with access to shopping, jobs and social services.
All residents with incomes below 60 percent of the area median income will receive case management, which includes referrals to public assistance, educational and employment programs, and community-based services. They will also be able to participate in financial education, credit counseling, micro loans, free tax preparation services and the opportunity to open matched savings accounts.
Many partners are involved with the $4.6 million KCADV Homes Lexington project.
The Housing Partnership Inc. has partnered with the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence (KCADV) to serve as the project developers.
The Kentucky Housing Corporation is providing $338,000 in Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and a $226,000 loan from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund; The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government is providing $499,000 in federal HOME funds and a $560,000 loan from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund; HOPE of Kentucky is providing a $3.3 million construction loan; and the Lexington Housing Authority is providing Section 8 housing choice vouchers to qualified tenants.
The National Equity Fund Inc., of Chicago, is the development’s investor, James Burris is the project’s architect and BosseMattingly Constructors is the general contractor.
