Sonoco closing New Albany plant, laying off 76 employees

New Albany, Ind. – Sonoco has announced its intention to permanently close its packaging facility in New Albany, Ind.

According to a letter to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development office, 76 employees will be laid off. Sonoco is a global provider of packaging products and services.

The plant is scheduled to close by the end of August, 2016, while employees are expected to be released from employment on Jan. 2, 2016. The letter says the company has been in contact with the Indiana Rapid Response team.

In February, General Mills-Pillsbury announced that it was shutting down their New Albany facility, which is next door to the Sonoco plant. General Mills-Pillsbury plans to close that plant in the summer of 2016 as well, which will affect 400 employees.
