Progress continues on Mountain Parkway Expansion

Reduced speed limits in some areas

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 30, 2015) — Construction and clearing activities are continuing along a nearly 6-mile stretch of the Mountain Parkway to the west of Salyersville.

Parkway expansionThe project, described as the Magoffin County West Segment, runs from just west of Mile Point 70 to just east of Mile Point 75 of the Mountain Parkway.

The speed limit in the area has been reduced to 45 mph. Traffic on the parkway may be slowed or stopped periodically for the safety of workers and travelers.

Gifford Road Interchange

Significant construction and site work continues near Gifford Road, where a new interchange is being built. The interchange will provide new access to and from the Mountain Parkway and serve an industrial park being planned just to the north of the interchange.

Blasting and earthwork continue near the interchange, and drivers should prepare for periodic traffic stoppages not lasting more than 20 minutes.

Late last month, both lanes of traffic shifted to what will become the eastbound lanes of the new Mountain Parkway roadway to allow crews to work on what will become the westbound lanes.

Crews recently demolished an existing bridge over the Middle Fork of the Licking River to make way for a new bridge to carry westbound lanes of the parkway. Work on the bridge sub-structure is expected to take place throughout the winter, and the deck of the bridge likely will be put in place this spring. After completion, the Mountain Parkway in this section will be expanded to provide four-lane access.

KY 30 interchange

Crews are continuing significant clearing and site work around the current KY 30 interchange near Mile Point 72 of the parkway to prepare for construction in the area. The project will include modernizing and improving the KY 30 interchange as well as realigning and widening about 2½ miles of roadway.

Construction will continue on an 840-foot culvert, made up of 1,400 cubic yards of concrete and located east of Exit 72, during the coming weeks. Excavation work also will continue before building up the base for this portion of the new Mountain Parkway roadway. Periodic blasting will continue, causing traffic stoppages for no more than 20 minutes at a time.

Salyersville interchange

Sewer and water line construction continues around the KY 7/Salyersville interchange, located immediately west of Salyersville’s Restaurant Row area. Crews also continue to clear land in the area to prepare for construction.

About the project

The Mountain Parkway Expansion is a 46-mile transportation improvement project that will create a wider, safer connection between Eastern Kentucky and the rest of the Commonwealth.

The project will widen 30 miles of the existing parkway from two lanes to four lanes, and will extend the parkway another 16 miles between Salyersville and Prestonsburg.
