Volunteers sought to count homeless in Louisville Jan. 28

Hundreds of volunteers needed

LOUSIIVLLE, Ky. (Jan. 7, 2016) — The Coalition for the Homeless has scheduled the 2016 Homeless Street Count from 4-6 a.m. on Jan. 28. Conducted each year in January, the goal of the Street Count is to verify the number of people sleeping outdoors in Metro Louisville. The Coalition for the Homeless and its partnering homeless service providers rely heavily on volunteers for this effort and need hundreds of volunteers to help conduct the count again this year.

homeless“The more volunteers we have the more areas we can cover and the greater our chances are of getting an accurate count,” said Natalie Harris, executive director of the Coalition for the Homeless. “The Street Count is a key part of making sure we are reaching the right people in our efforts.”

People interested in participating can sign up at www.louhomeless.org. All volunteers will need to attend a mandatory training session from 6-7 p.m. on Jan. 27 at Hotel Louisville, 120 West Broadway. They will then meet at the hotel just before 4 a.m. on Jan. 28 and get instructions and form four-person teams. After searching known homeless locations throughout the county, all volunteers are invited back to Hotel Louisville for breakfast.

An accurate count is important in order to help our community plan how to best dedicate resources to the most vulnerable Louisvillians. In 2016, the Coalition aims to end chronic homelessness and maintain an end for veteran homelessness For more information call (502) 636-9550.
